New Brunswick Bear Hunt 2012

June 21, 2012
Just came back from my first ever black bear hunt, and all can say is wow, what a trip. Although I failed at putting down a big bruin with my bow, the trip exceeded my expectations. It was exciting, relaxing, exhilerationg and nerve racking all at once.
I stayed at Big Paw Outfitters, with Kevin Caissie, in Renous, New Brunswick. Everything was really top notch. The accomodations, the food, the guides and cook, and yes the hunting, were all more than I expected. Five hunters out of eight, put down bears, and everyone had a shot at one. My shot was on Friday afternoon, the last day. Unfortunately I hit the bear too far back, and was not able to recover the animal. I am still sick about the missed opportunity, but it is part of hunting, and the entire trip was truly a experience I'll never forget.

Strike one...and strike two...

May 23, 2012

Well the MA turkeys are safe from me this year. Several attempts with the bow (and camera) have resulted in two of the most exciting hunts I have ever had, the latest one especially. The third day of the season, had me sitting less than 30 ft from 3 gobblers roosted at eye level. All three birds found their way in bow range. I pulled the trigger, and watched the arrow fly right through the top section of the birds back. Found nothing but feathers after watching the big Tom take flight off the...

Lost a father and a great outdoorsman

February 23, 2012
I great man was laid to rest last Thursday. My father. He was well loved by many, many people. Aside from raising me and teaching me the right way to live my life, he also taught me the right way to be an Outdoorsman. He showed me how important it was to respect nature, to understand how lucky I was to be able to enjoy it. It was never about the prize at the end for my dad, it was about the adventure of getting there. He was a true working class outdoorsman, and never took things for granted....

2011 Season coming to a close

December 12, 2011

Although my extremely active one year old has limited my posts from this blog, the season has not been that exciting. Aside from shooting my frist coyote with a bow, I have little to write about. I have had several young bucks (1 1/2 yr olds) within bow range, and several does (no tag) , but my arrow has remained knocked, everytime. Other than getting winded by two different 2 1/2 year old eight points, I have yet to see a mature buck, even on camera.
This has to be the oddest hunting season ...

Bottom of the Ninth with two outs….(Excerpt from "The Gift")

October 7, 2011

It was 2003 the day before New Years Eve. I remember it well, not just because it was one of my most memorable days in the woods, but it was going to be the first New Years Eve I would be spending alone (with out my wife) in eleven years. I had made it through Christmas, barely, but I was still emotionally a mess. My friend Chris was having a big bash at his house, bon fire, tons of food and booze. As much as I didn’t feel like being around a bunch of people (especially people that I hadn...

Two Firsts Collide - The Arrow Drop (Excerpt from "The Gift")

September 23, 2011

I was running a little late this cold morning. I knew I could make it to my stand by daybreak, but I liked getting settled in at least 20 or 30 minutes before the sun cracked the horizon. As I pulled into my cousin Jeff’s driveway, I raced to get all my gear together, so I could shuffle down the path to the awaiting dark woods. As I approached the path I realized that it was not going to be a quiet trip to my stand. The ground was frozen, and everything was crunchy. Once I got t...

Baby Luck Buck (excerpt from "The Gift")

September 13, 2011
2010 had been one of the craziest years of my life. My dad of 85 years, had severe complications from heart surgery that he had done in the spring. Aside from coding in front of my mom and I, he was in hospitals and rehabs for months, with every type of tube or machine on him. Paralleling my dads’ sickness, was the stress of my wife and I trying to conceive a child. After undergoing a tubal reversal, and a miscarriage, and a tubal removal due to an Ectopic pregnancy, we were told in January...

About this page

Kevin Poulos Thanks to my dad and other family members, I have been fishing and hunting almost my entire life. It has truly been a gift that has enriched my life and made me who I am today. I currently reside in Massachusetts, were I have been living for all of my 41 years. I have many great memories both fishing and hunting, most of which that were experienced right here in New England. I have been blessed as well to experience some of these memories outside of the North East, such as Canada and Alaska. A few years ago I started writing a book (The Gift) of my experiences growing up in the outdoors. It was more of a gift to my dad, who spent his whole life fishing and hunting as well as passing it down to his sons. When my dad became ill last year after his heart surgery, I gave him the rough drafts for him to read, just to help distract him from his daily health struggles. Although I am still adding and editing some of these "journal" type entries, I am going to periodically post a new but random section from "The Gift" into this Blog .
